Our Inspiration: Shradheya Bhaorao Deoras

Shradheya Bhaorao Deoras, a great soul, was born in Nagpur on 19th November 1917. He came in touch with Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, the founder of Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), in his childhood. To expand the work of RSS in UP, he was sent to Uttar Pradesh in 1937. There he joined Lucknow University for his further studies. He stood first in his B.Com and LLB examinations and was awarded a gold medal for his outstanding performance. Being the President of the Lucknow University Student Union (LUSU), he invited the Nation’s heartthrob “Netajee” Subhash Chandra Bose for LUSU’s inaugural ceremony.

After completing his education, he decided to devote his life for social service. In next three decades, he formed several institutions and moulded the life of several personalities. His vision of strong and modern Bharat saw the growth of many organizations in the field of education. He was instrumental in establishing first Saraswati Shishu Mandir in Gorakhpur in 1952, which has grown into a strong chain of more than 25,000 schools with approximately 25,00,000 students and a team of more than 1,00,000 dedicated teachers. His work extended from sensitive state of Jammu & Kashmir in northwest to the tribal areas of Jharkhand and Odisha.

He was appalled by the sub human conditions of forest dwellers (Vanvasees) as well as those inhabiting the urban slums. Social and economic circumstances deprived them of basic facilities of Health and Education. He worked his whole life towards upliftment of this section of the society.

Younger brother of third Sarsanghachalak Shri Balasaheb ji Deoras, Bhaorao ji groomed many of the well-known leaders and workers like Pandit Deen Dayal Uppadhyay, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Shri Nanajee Deshmukh, Shri Rajendra Singh “Rajju Baiya”, Shri Bapu Rao Moghe, Shri Vishnu Kant Shastri and many others who devoted their life selflessly in building up the organizational net-work from scratch and to promote the ideal of Bharatiya culture of Sarv-Dharma Sambhav (सर्व धर्म समभाव). While doing this, he mostly confined himself to the Socio-economic-cultural ethos of Sangh work-culture. Positive change in nation’s mindset was his credo. He was inspiration behind many a ventures of national reconstruction which were instrumental in converting to reality a dream of strong nation.

He left his physical body on 13th May 1992, but is still present among us in the form of institutions he created, workers he groomed and legacy he left behind.

The Beginning

To pay homage to the departed soul, a prayer meeting was organized in Lucknow, on 13th May 1993, the first death anniversary of Ma. Bhaorao Deoras. The Indebted Nation and disciples were wondering how to pay their homage to this Visionary Karmayogi. The meeting was presided over by Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who gave vent to the feelings of all present there. He said, “Shradheya Bhaorao Deoras ji wished that common men, especially those staying in hamlets and dwellings, Harijans (Dalits), tribals (vanvasis), people living in hilly area (Girijans) and others staying in villages and urban slums under the conditions of utter poverty, social and economic backwardness, exploited and un-cared for centuries need special attention. They should be provided with necessary education, health and other facilities and support appropriate to the Bhartiya cultural milieu. These will enable them to achieve self-sufficiency and pride, so that they can participate in Nation’s mainstream and create a homogeneous and strong Bharat.”

It was decided to form a Trust in the name of Shradheya Bhaorao ji Deoras, to continue his work for rural and urban downtrodden. His concern for Tribals and their environment, loss of forest dwellings and habitat, rich traditions and abject poverty was overwhelming and full of compassion. In his last days of life, he wanted every Swayamsewak to devote his life for the service of poor and weak. A smile on their face through education, health & wealth symbolizing a resurgent Bharat would have made him happy.

Bhaorao Deoras Sewa Nyas was established on 29th Dec 1993, with its headquarters at Lucknow and Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee as its Founder President.
